Origin

The wine comes from the village of Baumgarten (cadastral municipality of Mautern) and is part of the “Schlossberg” vineyard; unfortunately, there is only a more than inadequate description of the vineyard in the Vinea vineyard directory: https://www.vinea-wachau.at/mywachau/rieden/rieden-details/myw_vineyard/schlossberg-1 Out of pure selfishness, I hope that not every reader of these lines and a tasting experience will suffer the same fate as me, because I have packed two boxes of it myself.

Colour

Bright straw yellow

Nose

The aroma of this expressive, perfect Pinot Blanc was opulent, rich, and complex from the very beginning. The white blossoms are joined by lemons, ripe pears, hazelnuts, vanilla crescents, apple tart, and biscuits. Herbal aspects like rosemary and thyme have an unusual, almost crazy effect.

Palate

The still vibrant acidity is underscored by a very fine malolactic acidity (yogurt), fitting perfectly, giving the overall impression a harmonious kick and a juicy, fresh shine. The punch and finish impress with their persistence, although the wine boasts lightness and apparent grace right up until the end.

The 1987 Baumgarten zu Mautern Weissburgunder Federspiel-Kabinett is deep, fresh and a little dirty or maybe not based on perfectly ripe but nevertheless intense and fleshy fruits. The finish is intense and complex yet also a little thrifty and not really long except in terms of phenols, which are probably a little greenish. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
