Product description for Nikolaihof Aus den Gärten, Grüner Veltliner Federspiel 2013 (bio)
Bottled in 04/2024 “late bottled”.
Info
The vines grow on clay, loess, and paragneiss. The wine was aged for eleven years in large, old wooden barrels. Bottled in April 2024 on a lunar fruit day. Analytically, it has a dry residual sugar of 1.2g/l and an acidity of 4.7g/l.
Colour
Bright lemon yellow with green reflections.
Nose
As expected, this wine is a force to be reckoned with upon first contact. Its depth—in the first few moments alone—is phenomenal. It builds with density and earthiness. Its long barrel aging and contact with the yeast leave their mark. Don’t take it too lightly, because this is so much more. A mature, ripe, sublime, and dark wine stands before us in the glass. Lemon, kaffir lime, and bergamot lend it both freshness and depth. A hint of sencha tea hangs in the air. Mandarin skin provides a tart to fresh experience. Ripe pear and quince slowly develop. As the temperature rises, the stone fruit becomes more prominent. The yeast appears discreetly in the background, but is an essential link. Herbs and spices are present in enormous variety, constantly evolving: pepper, coriander, curry, lemongrass, caraway, clove, and parsley. Completely wild. Every nose captivates anew. An incredible wine.
Palate
You long for the first sip with great longing. Here, too, it shines from the very beginning. It stands sublimely in the glass. The Grüner Veltliner Federspiel from the gardens is practically at peace. Its balance and tension are unparalleled. It is energetic, but not intrusive. You immediately sense its quality and skill. With a moderate acidity structure and a restrained melt, it thrives on autolysis. This delicate mouthfeel is characterized by abundant umami. The aromas from the nose reappear very subtly. Mango and papaya linger on the finish, perfectly complementing the herbs and spices.

Wine Advocate
Score: 93
The 2013 Aus den Gärten Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Late Bottled was filled in April last year, so 10 years later than the regular bottling. The wine is clear, intense and fresh on the deep and savory, mineral-scented nose that reveals subtle fruit with lots of salt and a still fresh or ageless, in any case not primary, fruity bouquet. Dense and textured on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, round, lush and refined, dense and sustainable Veltliner with a spectacular finish that is still tight and grippy, with distinctive tannins. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
