Product description for Marco de Bartoli Marsala Vergine Riserva 1988 1988

Christoph Raffelt: The Vergine from 1988 is extremely delicate and fine. It initially surprises with its dryness, which one is not used to from a Marsala. But then the immense depth and complexity of this exceptional Marsala becomes clear. The complexity is not overwhelming, but rather soothing. The wine inspires meditation, indulgence, and pause. It is reminiscent of a top-quality Cognac or Armagnac, and of course, on the palate, it also reveals what the nose already suggests: orange, leather, walnut, tangerine peel, and dark chocolate.

Wine

Marco de Bartoli, Marsala Vergine Riserva 1988

About the wine

The Marsala Vergine is not topped up with warmed and caramelized Mistella must, as is usual, but exclusively with the finest Acquavite. It was aged for 27 years in oak and walnut barrels of various sizes.

Colour

dark amber

Nose

The nose is almost ethereally fragrant, dry, and characterized by the connection between old Marsala and the sea. Notes of dried figs, dates, oranges, and orange peel combine with green walnuts and a hint of salt, seaweed, and anchovies. If you close your eyes, you have the impression of holding the essence of Sicily in your glass.

Palate

The Vergine from 1988 is extremely delicate and fine. It initially surprises with its dryness, which one is not used to from a Marsala. But then the immense depth and complexity of this exceptional Marsala becomes clear. The complexity is not overwhelming, but rather pleasant. The wine inspires meditation, revelry, and pause. Reminiscent of a top-quality Cognac or Armagnac, it naturally reveals on the palate what the nose already hints at: orange, leather, walnut, tangerine peel, and dark chocolate.

Score: 95

The 1988 Marsala Vergine Riserva mixes amber with red hues, lifting up dusty and savory with notes of cave-aged gouda, quince, baked apple and clove. With time in the glass, it gains in volume, evolving to show rich dark chocolates and dried roses. There are depths of texture here, yet it’s wonderfully balanced by vibrant acidity as salted caramel and exotic spices wash across the palate, leaving a coating of mineral-drenched orchard fruits under an air of burnt sugar and tobacco. The experience goes on and on, as minutes can go by, and you’re still not just tasting but feeling the 1988’s glycerol heft lingering incredibly long. This edition of the Vergine Riserva was bottled in 2019, which is stated on the front label.
