Wine Information

Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz run the organic and biodynamic Maisulan winery in the Basque region of Rioja. They produce this red wine from the indigenous Graciano grape variety, which was previously used almost exclusively as a minor blending partner for Tempranillo cuvées, but is now also cultivated as a single varietal by some winemakers. The grapes come from a vineyard located at an altitude of 520 meters with the limestone-clay soils typical of Rioja Alavesa. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in the cellar, followed by 16 months of aging in used barriques.

Nose

The bouquet is stimulating and elegant, combining mineral, floral, and red fruit notes, and especially aromas of Mediterranean herbs such as thyme. The nose is sensual; it appears neither lush nor overripe, but very clear, fresh, and fine.

Palate

The Graciano grape variety is known for its good acidity and structure. However, it sometimes lacks finesse. Not so with this red wine, which presents itself extremely elegantly on the palate. The attack is fresh and juicy with aromas of Mediterranean herbs, cherry fruit, and a hint of citrus. The tannins are fine-grained and the texture is silky. The Maisulan Graciano 2022 is not a heavy or overloaded wine, but rather precise and elegant with a medium to lean body. The wood is also excellently integrated. In this respect, this wine stands for clarity and transparency, freshness, and drinkability. Added to this is an aromatic finish with a lovely herbal tartness and good length.
