Product description for Loimer Traminer Alte Rebe mit ACHTUNG 2017 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the Traminer once again delivers this firm, ripe fruit, but this time accompanied by a distinctive texture, a generous portion of tannin along with salt and a touch of cubeb pepper as accompanying components. The Traminer brings a lot of punch to the palate, although the acidity remains lean, appropriate to the vinification method and grape variety. The wine is powerful, yet refined, especially in its tannin, which ensures a silky mouthfeel right up to the long finish.
About the wine
After the selective hand-harvest in 20-kilo crates at the beginning of October 2017, the grapes were sorted and destemmed. After spontaneous fermentation, the Traminer was fermented on the skins in acacia barrels. Fermentation lasted four weeks at a maximum of 25°C. The wine was aged in used 777- and 300-liter oak barrels on full lees for ten months. After the first racking, a light sulfurization (15 mg/l) took place, after which the wine was aged for a further eight months in wooden barrels. In May 2018, it was bottled without filtration, fining, or further SO2 addition.
Colour
Light orange, slightly cloudy amber colour
Nose
On the nose, this Traminer offers mash fermentation par excellence: rose blossoms, lychee, kumquats, nutmeg, licorice, and blood oranges, herbs, aromatic hops, and crumbly apple, with a hint of quince and sugared ginger. This Traminer with respect is bursting with aromas. Everything seems ripe, yet bone dry.
Palate
On the palate, the Traminer delivers that firm, ripe fruit once again, but this time accompanied by a distinctive texture, a generous portion of tannin, salt, and a touch of cubeb pepper as accompanying components. The Traminer brings considerable punch to the palate, although the acidity remains lean, in keeping with the vinification method and grape variety. The wine is powerful yet refined, especially in its tannin, which ensures a silky mouthfeel right through to the long finish.
