Product description for Loimer Ried Steinmassl Riesling 1.ÖTW 2022 (bio)

The Steinmassl vineyard extends from 240 to 340 meters above sea level and faces south-southeast to southwest. The crystalline parent rock is characterized by paragneiss and mica schist, along with dark amphibolites and light granite gneiss. Their relatively strong weathering results in cambisol soils of varying thickness, up to one meter thick in some locations, interspersed with numerous stones and a slight limestone content. Selectively harvested by hand in early to mid-October, the grapes underwent a 12- to 24-hour maceration period before the must was spontaneously fermented, 50% in steel tanks and 50% in wooden barrels. After four to six weeks of fermentation, the wine was aged on the full lees in oak barrels for eleven months and, after racking in September 2022, aged on the fine lees in steel tanks for a further eight months. Bottled unfiltered in August 2024.

Colour

Light straw yellow with green reflections.

Nose

The nose is dominated by ripe yellow fruit: apricots, nectarines, and a fresh slice of butter cake outline the aromatic profile. The crystal-clear fruit radiates a light yellow and is underpinned by a delicately salty minerality reminiscent of wet blackboard chalk and a fresh sea breeze. A touch of quince and small, yellow, plump pears fill the fruit basket and fill the room with a fruity aroma.

Palate

Polished and clear on the palate, it is almost sharp-edged, so precisely is the juicy, ripe fruit framed in the stable minerality. With a chalky, grippy texture, it builds up considerable pressure on the palate: rich in extract with saline tension, it almost seems to burst on the palate. Hedonistically taut yet super juicy – a southern Alpine Riesling with a northern Alpine character and a salty, cool finish.
