Product description for Loimer Ried Heiligenstein Riesling 1.ÖTW 2017 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, this wine shows, even at a young age, why this site is so famous. Its depth and vibrancy are impressive. The Riesling has plenty of juice with plenty of stone fruit, supported by citrus notes. This is where the piquancy and freshness in this wine come from, whose acidity provides a taut framework but only becomes truly apparent on the second sip. The Heiligenstein is extremely lively and vibrant with its deep minerality, finely textured and absolutely precise right up to the long finish.
About the wine
The fruit comes from the Zöbinger Heiligenstein, the Grand Cru of the Kamptal. The soils of the steep terraces consist of feldspar-rich, reddish-brown sandstone with portions of quartz porphyry and siltstone. After selective hand-harvesting in 20-kilo crates on September 23 and October 2, 2017, there was a 24-hour pre-fermentation and whole-bunch pressing. The Riesling was spontaneously fermented in stainless steel tanks for six weeks at a maximum temperature of 22°C. The wine was aged in steel tanks on the full lees for ten months and in large wooden barrels on the fine lees for a further ten months.
Colour
: Light golden yellow with green reflections.
Nose
: The Ried Heiligenstein Riesling presents itself as elegant, delicately spicy, and complex. Ripe fruits are the trump cards here. Apricots and vineyard peaches, greengage and yellow cherries, papaya, a hint of passion fruit, dates, and yellow pears meet crushed stone, wild herbs, and a hint of honey and licorice.
Palate
Even at a young age, this wine demonstrates the fame of this vineyard. Its depth and vibrancy are impressive. The Riesling boasts plenty of juice, with plenty of stone fruit supported by citrus notes. This accounts for the piquancy and freshness in this wine, whose acidity provides a taut framework but only becomes truly apparent upon second sip. The Heiligenstein is extremely lively and vibrant in its deep minerality, finely textured, and absolutely precise right up to the long finish.

Wine Advocate
Score: 92+?
Loimer’s 2017 Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW is clear, pure and fresh on the deep and still-discreet nose that is provided with some greenish fruit and lemon aromas that do not show much charm right now. The palate is dense, intense and ripe yet firmly structured and densely woven, very elegant and provided with a quiet flow. The 2017 is still astringent and needs years to open up. I am not completely convinced of this bottle, but the material seems to be impressive. I’m looking forward to tasting this Heiligenstein again one day. Tasted in September and October 2019.
