Wine Information

The Rothenberg plot from which this wine comes was planted in 1934 and is surrounded by a small wall. It is a steep stretch in the northernmost corner of the Roter Hang, directly adjacent to the Pettenthal.

Colour

Medium straw yellow

Nose

The 2022 Nierstein Rothenberg has a dark, spicy and extract-rich aroma. A very fine reduction can be found here. It smells of smoke, salted lemon, crushed flint, a touch of petrichor, herbs, mustard seeds, and a hint of pink pepper. It has a dramatic, almost somber opening, but with repeated bright reflections of light.

Palate

On the palate, this is a small miracle. Here, too, the wine is darkly spicy and rich in extract, with plenty of dark stone, plenty of grip, and firmness. It’s as if the stone were exploding on the tongue in a mixture of black berries, lemons, zest, graphite, salt, yeast, and herbs. The wine is elegant, but at the same time builds up a lot of momentum, pushing forward, is taut, distant, and still needs time. But this is certainly one of the great Rieslings of the vintage.
