Product description for Jean-Marc & Thomas Bouley Volnay AOC 2021

At the domaine, founded in 1919, Thomas Bouley has ensured an unstoppable rise to the top of the Volnay appellation since 2010. Meticulous vineyard work and his impressive feel for wood and tannins produce wines with power and substance, finesse, pure fruit, and rondeur. Bouley’s vineyards are located primarily around Volnay, but also in Pommard, Beaune, and Meursault. His main focus, however, is definitely Volnay, where he creates an impressive range, from the declassified Bourgogne Côte d’Or to the local wines and 1er Crus, which precisely reflect the terroir and demonstrate how high-quality and balanced one can achieve in this corner of Burgundy.

Information about the Wine

The Pinot Noir comes from five plots totaling two hectares in Volnay on the lower and upper slopes. The average age of the vines is 34 years. The soils are deep, clayey, and sit on a limestone base. The grapes were fully destemmed this year. Fermentation took place in open vats, and the wine was aged for 18 months in barriques. The proportion of new wood was 25%.

Colour

Deep garnet red, slightly translucent.

Nose

The nose of the Volnay Village 2021 is fresh, slightly yeasty (with a very fine sweetness), reminiscent of barberry and cranberry, some sour cherry and sweet cherry, and some ethereal notes. The wine does not betray the vintage, but appears fine and elegant.

Palate

On the palate, the Volnay Village is juicy and lively, with a distinct but well-integrated acidity and a tart finish that should continue to age. However, the smoothness, the fine extract sweetness, the lively fruit and the elegant texture make the Volnay an extremely attractive wine.

Wine Advocate

Score: 91

The 2022 Volnay Village offers up aromas of cassis, cherries, rose petals and baking chocolate, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and textural palate with good density and structure. It’s the usual blend combining holdings in the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin—which bring fat and flesh—with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes—that lend the wine its tension and relief.

Vinous

Score: 93

The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru is another demonstration of how this challenging season managed to produce some gems. Ordered from a restaurant list, it has a bright bouquet with vivid redcurrant and cranberry scents laced with Earl Grey. It’s not powerful, but very well delineated. The palate is likewise framed by fine tannins, crisp red berry fruit notes and an inescapable sense of terroir on the tensile finish. This is a nimble and precise Clos des Chêne that is drinking perfectly now, though it will continue to drink well for a decade at least. This was tasted at Bar du Square in Beaune.
