Product description for Huet Le Mont Moelleux 2023 (bio)

Wine Information

Le Mont lies above the tuff caves and east of the Huet vineyard on the first plateau of Vouvray, the so-called Première Côte, and faces south. It was first mentioned in the 15th century and has been highly valued ever since. Like the other two vineyards, Le Mont, with its nine hectares, is solely owned by the Huet vineyard and was acquired by Gaston Huet in 1957 as the last of the three vineyards. Its topsoil, several meters deep, is characterized by a pebbly, sometimes fist-sized flint, known locally as perron, in deep green clay. The base is the usual Turonian tuff limestone. In 2023, the vineyards in Vouvray were extensively infested by Drosophila suzukii, the spotted-wing drosophila. This required rigorous quality management. There are already multiple harvests per vineyard at Huet for the individual varieties of Chenin Blanc. This year, every single berry had to be inspected, and at least 25% of the harvest was discarded. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the multiple harvests. Malolactic fermentation only took place in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muières. At Huet, moelleux usually means between 45 and 55 grams of residual sugar. In this case, it is an impressive 74 grams.

Nose

The 2023 Le Mont Moelleux appears significantly darker and riper on the nose than the Le Mont Demi-Sec. It is a dense wine that combines notes of quince, kumquats, and mango with brown sugar, rock, and smoke. Ripe, yet precise and orderly, it also appears elegant and complex.

Palate

The palate once again demonstrates the grandeur of the terroir. Although the 2023 Le Mont Moelleux has more than three times the residual sugar of the lighter Demi-Sec, the balance is inspiring. The fullness of the ripe, slightly sweet fruit is balanced by a tailored acidity and the dark minerality of the quartzite. The Moelleux has grip and a clear phenolic structure, along with the rich stone fruit, tart notes of kumquats and bitter oranges, tobacco, and rock. All of this comes across as extremely skillful, harmonious, and beautiful.

Score: 95

The 2023 Vouvray Moelleux Le Mont is a ripe, round, serious, suit-wearing wine style that’s upright and conservative. It’s sweet (74g/l) but never feels luscious, and yet there’s a tropical character to the fruit that gives richness to this reserved style. The effect of the flint is clear in the 2023’s sense of freshness. It’s textured, pure, balanced and harmonious.
