Product description for Huet Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1ère Trie 1993 (bio)
Information about the wine
The Haut-Lieu is the vineyard that is the origin of the Huet winery. The Huet family first visited the village of Vouvray in 1928 and was so impressed by the property that now forms the winery, including the five-hectare Le Haut-Lieu vineyard, that they acquired both and founded the Huet winery. Le Haut-Lieu lies on the Vouvray plateau and is characterized by deep brown clay with a little flint and chalk in the topsoil. The topsoil is called aubuis locally. The bedrock consists of yellow tuffeau limestone and lies four meters deep. The Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” is a residually sweet wine, made from the first grapes affected by botrytis. In the case of the 1993 vintage, residual sweetness means 61 grams of sugar and 9.3 grams of acidity. The 1993 vintage comes as a 30-years-after release directly from the winery’s treasure trove. It is a rare wine, as it was the last vintage from the old vines that produced the legendary 1947 and 1945 vintages. The vineyard was replanted in 1994. The 1993 vintage is from the same vines as the legendary 1947 and 1945 vintages!
Colour
Intense amber with slight tartar cloudiness
Nose
The Le Haut Lieu Moelleux “Première Trie” 1993 is initially a quiet wine that becomes more and more haunting over time. The wine could hardly have a more classic feel. This is Vouvray in its purest form, with notes of dried figs and candied apricots. Added to this are baked oranges and almonds like in a Mallorcan cake. There’s also burnt salted caramel, a touch of ginger, and iodine. Although it all seems very densely interwoven, there’s still something iridescently bright and light-footed here.
Palate
Here, too, we have a dense wine that appears dark and mysterious. It seems perfectly aged. The wine does have a sweetness, but this is hardly noticeable due to the floating, light, lively, impressively youthful acidity; it simply resonates. Alongside hints of honey, caramelized pears, and apples, dark spices and rocky notes open up dimensions of depth here. The wine finishes with a light peppery note. An event!
