Product description for Henri & Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain rouge “Sous Roche” AOC 2020 (bio)

Information

The Saint-Romain Sous Roche 2020 comes from the eponymous vineyard in the eastern part of the appellation. Sous Roche faces east and lies at an altitude of 380 meters. The vineyard, with its limestone soil known as Calcosol sur Marne de Saint-Romain, is home to 60-year-old vines. The grapes are hand-harvested, partially destemmed, and fermented spontaneously in stainless steel vats. A blend of pigeage and remontage, meaning under-punching and overflowing of the pomace cap, is followed by malolactic fermentation. Aging lasts for ten to twelve months in a mix of 228-, 350-, and 500-liter barriques and tonneaux, of which no more than 10% are replaced annually. The wine is tasted daily, and the barrels are racked when Frédéric Buisson deems it appropriate. It is fined with bentonite and only very coarsely filtered. Sulfurization only occurs during bottling, with a maximum of 40 to 50 mg/l total sulfite.

Colour

Quite deep cherry red

Nose

The Saint-Romain Sous Roche 2020 is entirely in keeping with the house’s style. The fruit—primarily black cherry and sour cherry—combines with cinnamon bark and dark chocolate, with slightly green but ripe notes of currant leaves and stems. The aroma is both inviting and charming, yet austere.

Palate

The palate is elegant and silky. It is a wine that already offers great drinking pleasure, as the tannin is fine and polished, the texture is almost creamy, and the red fruit has a sweet core and offers a sweetness of extract. The wine is extremely elegant and long, noble in its seamless blend of fruit and tannins, and also lively in its acidity. It’s simply good and, like all the domaine’s wines, precise, lean, and with a wood that serves the purpose and never overpowers.

Wine Advocate

Score: 91

A terrific effort from the Buisson brothers, the 2020 Saint-Romain Sous Roches bursts with scents of wild berries, plums, loamy soil and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, saline finish, it transcends expectations of the appellation.

Franck and Frédérick Buisson continue to establish themselves as the reference point for Saint-Romain. This 19-hectare domaine has been estate bottling since the late 1940s and farming organically since the 1970s. White grapes are sorted, crushed and pressed for two and a half hours, and musts are barreled down with minimal settling. Reds see a gentle extract. The result is elegantly textural, chiseled wines that can age very well but are also hard to resist young. In ever warmer vintages, these wines seem to go from strength to strength, and everything here comes warmly recommended.

Vinous

Score: 88

The 2020 Saint-Romain Sous Roche, which includes 50% whole bunches, has quite a potent floral, violent-scented bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, quite linear for the vintage, saline with a dash of white pepper towards the finish. This will not require cellaring and seems ready to go.
