The Buisson family is one of the oldest inhabitants of the village of Saint-Romain on the Côte de Beaune. Their family tree can be traced back to the 12th century. They have been winegrowers since at least 1758. When Saint-Romain received its own AOC in 1947, Henri seized the opportunity and founded his own vineyard, initially with 5 hectares. Henri’s son Gilles later joined the estate and expanded it to 14 hectares in 2000. His sons Franck and Frédérick had it certified organic in 2009. Henri, however, had already farmed the estate this way since the 1960s. Since 2018, the vineyard has officially been certified according to Biodyvin guidelines. The domaine is divided into 12 hectares of Pinot Noir and 7 hectares of Chardonnay. The white and red Saint-Romains are archetypes of the appellation: precise, transparent, vital, and balanced. There are also wines from other Beaune appellations such as Pommard, Meursault and Corton.

The high point of the range in red is the 2020 Corton Grand Cru Les Renardes, a beautiful young wine that offers up aromas of sweet red berries, cassis, exotic spices and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and seamless palate that’s deep and elegant, with bright acids, supple tannin and a long, sapid finish.

Franck and Frédérick Buisson continue to establish themselves as the reference point for Saint-Romain. This 19-hectare domaine has been estate bottling since the late 1940s and farming organically since the 1970s. White grapes are sorted, crushed and pressed for two and a half hours, and musts are barreled down with minimal settling. Reds see a gentle extract. The result is elegantly textural, chiseled wines that can age very well but are also hard to resist young. In ever warmer vintages, these wines seem to go from strength to strength, and everything here comes warmly recommended.

The 2020 Corton Les Renardes Grand Cru has a much more opulent and powerful nose than the Le Rognet, with blueberry and blackberry notes that are ripe and more floral. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins and a seam of graphite underneath with a nicely detailed, white pepper-tinged finish. Give this two or three years in bottle.
