Product description for Heinrich Blaufränkisch Alter Berg Leithaberg DAC 2017 (bio)
Information about the wine
The grapes for this Blaufränkisch come from the southeast-facing slope of Windener Alter Berg in the Leitha Mountains. Above this vineyard stands a cooling forest, and below you can see Lake Neusiedl, with cherry trees growing in the rows. The soil is characterized by barren limestone. The grapes were hand-picked at the beginning of October, followed by spontaneous fermentation on the skins for three weeks in wooden fermentation stands. The wine was then gently pressed using a basket press, and aged for 29 months in cellar amphorae and in used 500-liter oak barrels.
Colour
Fairly transparent ruby red
Nose
The Alter Berg’s colour is as dense as its aroma is intense and cool. It’s reminiscent of black cherries and sour cherries, plums and sloes, earth and undergrowth with damp forest floor and a touch of ivy. Added to this are notes of damp stone with petrichor, some aged venison, and fermented cardamom.
Palate
On the palate, it blossoms especially when decanted and then poured into a Burgundy glass. Then the immense tension and vibrant minerality that pulse through this dark, black fruit wine become clearly evident. This is a Blaufränkisch of puristic clarity and cool finesse, enriched by flashes of sweet fruit and yeast notes that lend the Blaufränkisch a subtle charm.

Wine Advocate
Score: 93
Fermented in open wooden fermenters and amphorae (partly with whole clusters) and aged in clay and 500-liter barrels for 29 months, the 2017 Blaufränkisch Ried Alter Berg opens with an open-hearted, intense, fine and elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe dark berries (elderberries, black berries, mulberries) and lemon rind notes. Cultivated on shallow limestone soils, this is a stunningly light, pure, fresh and finessed red wine with fine and refreshing tannins and a long and crunchy finish. Excellent! Tasted at the domain in June.
