Product description for Hajszan Neumann Pet Nat Brut 2023 (bio)
The 2023 vintage suffered a particularly long and wet winter. Bud break only began in May. Spring then brought warm temperatures, allowing time to catch up and finally flowering in mid-June. The summer started very warm and dry. August was a surprise, with cool, wet weather ending in drier weather but significantly cooler nights. A large wave of hail followed at the end of August, but without major damage to the vineyard. At the start of the harvest in early September, the sun again brought glorious weather and ensured very well-ripened grapes. The last day of harvest was already October 12th.
The vines for this Pet Nat are located within the Nussberg in Vienna. Neuburger comes from the Muckentahl vineyard, Müller-Thurgau is from the Weisleiten vineyard, and Riesling grows in the Preussen vineyard. The soil contains shell limestone weathering with a high clay content.
After the harvest, the grapes are macerated for a short three hours. The must is pre-clarified and then spontaneously fermented in steel tanks. Towards the end of the fermentation process, the wine is drawn into bottles and then completed under the crown cap. After six months in the bottle, the wine is riddled and disgorged.
The Hajszan Neumann winery uses Natural Muscat from the 2023 vintage as dosage.
Color
Slightly cloudy straw yellow with bright green reflections and a slight coarse bubble.
Nose
Hajszan Neumann’s Pet Nat has a playful and invitingly youthful aroma. Abundant green and yellow aromas frolic in the glass: mirabelle plum, lemon, peach, pear, passion fruit, and lychee. This order was deliberately chosen to remain true to this color interplay. Lemon balm, lemon thyme, and mint enliven it with a sense of freshness. Its yeasty nuances are reminiscent of the scent of freshly stirred dough, but also clearly reveal its craftsmanship.
Palate
On the palate, it is initially dominated by its invigorating, yet never intrusive, carbonation. This guides it straight ahead. It initially seems to shake off its baby fat. Then the yeast comes into play and builds up a slightly melting texture. This moment is abruptly interrupted by a loud click of the tongue, only to then give the stage back to the aromatics of the nose. An uncomplicated sip of wine that refreshes, motivates, but above all never demands. It gives away very willingly.
