Product description for Enric Soler Improvisacio 2021

Info

The Vinya dels Taus vineyard formed the basis for Enric Soler’s project. The old vines required a laborious recultivation. All other wines were grown as clones from the genetic material of this plot. Improvisacio is based on three vineyards. 0.45 hectares of the Xarel-lo grape variety are located in the Sisqueta plot, directly adjacent to the Vinya dels Taus, which is fundamental to the small winery. A small portion of fifty-year-old Xarel-lo vines grow in the Darrere Casa plot. The remaining portion comes from the Espenyalluchs plot, which also gives its name to a separate wine. All plots are grass-covered, and the old vines grow spectacularly tall there. The wines used to be wild and impetuous. They developed their elegance and character through fermentation and aging in Franz Stockinger barrels. Improvisacio has always stood for aging in concrete eggs, whose inherent dynamics and structure shaped the yeasty character of the wine. Today, both containers are combined. Fermentation and aging on the lees take place in the same container for eight months before the final blend. The wines were given the necessary rest and time to stabilize. No clarification or filtration takes place. The resulting complexity is unique: wild, yet restful. The 2021 vintage was characterized by the following features: The beginning of the year was dry and cold. January also brought good amounts of precipitation and snowfall. February followed with unusually warm temperatures around 18°C and abundant fog. These early, warm temperatures led to the first visible buds as early as March. Things became quieter in March and April. Lower temperatures and little precipitation helped to delay bud break. It wasn’t until June and July that warm temperatures and dry conditions prevailed. The vitality of the vineyards was once again in demand, and growth was slow. The first signs of drought appeared at the end of July. Fortunately, the long-awaited rainfall followed at the end of July. The cold night temperatures are essential here – and this vintage was no exception. The heat wave didn’t hit until mid-August. A period of rain began at the end of August. The interplay of dry and humid, sunny and shady conditions slowed the ripening process again, so that good conditions prevailed for the harvest.

Nose

Improvisacio has delighted me for many, many years. This 2021 example is no different. Enric Soler has succeeded enormously in producing a Mediterranean wine that remains so wonderfully delicate. In its warm homeland in the Penedes, the Improvisacio benefits from both the proximity to the Mediterranean and the abundant active limestone in the subsoil. Hay and dried Mediterranean herbs dominate the nose: thyme, marjoram, and oregano. Almonds and hazelnuts provide depth and complexity. Almond, apple, and linden blossoms linger in the background. The fruit is extremely subtly flavoured, based on quince, nashi pear, and yellow apples. Mandarin skin and zest add delicate accents full of freshness and tartness. Lime and chalk remain omnipresent in the glass.

Palate

The first sip reinforces precisely these nose impressions. The fruit is louder and more open than initially expected. A fine acidity mingles with the blend. The bitter constituents play a hugely important role in this extremely active drink. The aromas of floral nuances and dried herbs clearly determine the finish and refreshingly enliven the moment. At times, it has a menthol and cooling effect, and this seems to continue.
