Product description for Clos i Terrasses Laurel 2022
Information about the wine
Clos i Terrasses and winemaker Daphne Glorian enjoy cult status. Since the late 1980s, the Swiss-born winemaker has contributed significantly to the rediscovery and meteoric rise of the Catalan wine-growing region of Priorat. In the 2000s, she was also one of the first in Priorat to convert to biodynamic viticulture. The house’s second wine, the Laurel 2022, is a cuvée made from the main variety Garnacha (approx. 75%), along with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines grow in terraced vineyards on barren slate soils. The wine is aged for 18 months in a combination of wooden barrels of various sizes, cement tanks, and clay amphorae.
Colour
Cherry red Nose The nose of the Laurel 2022 is of great clarity and finesse. It is refreshing and expressive, with a wonderful harmony of floral aromas, fresh red fruits, and Mediterranean herbs. The aroma is so sensual that you won’t want to stop smelling it.
Palate
On the palate, the Laurel is also highly elegant and precise, with a silky texture and the finest tannins. It has 15% alcohol, but feels almost lean and light-footed, and flows velvety smoothly through the mouth. This wine is also full of tension and power, with an incredibly juicy and delicately spicy finish. This is a Mediterranean wine par excellence, offering refreshing warmth. Overall, it is a wonderful, perfectly balanced Priorat that resonates more through elegance than power. It is complex and subtle and offers the highest drinking pleasure.

The 2022 Laurel has the grapes from the younger vines but still not the ones from Manyetes that will contribute to this wine in 2023 for the first time. This is quite aromatic, young tender and peachy, attractive. She finds this to be a classical vintage, balanced and ripe without excess, and the tannins are polished and elegant. In 2022, they used a little less Cabernet, so the wine is mostly Garnacha, with almost 20% Syrah and perhaps 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It matured mostly in concrete, oak vats and some 30 barrels, but some 20% of the volume matured in amphorae. She’s not crazy about amphorae; she finds that they close the wines. It’s medium-bodied, has a fine texture and feels elegant and light with a lot of finesse. She doesn’t want too long macerations with the grapes from the younger vines, but it has clout. It comes in at 15% alcohol, has very fine tannins and comes through as balanced and civilized, quite approachable already with mellow acidity. She’s very careful that the tannins don’t have too much astringency. 23,000 bottles were filled in May 2024. Tasted 10 months after bottling, the wine is very drinkable. This is a young wine that is ever changing, with the new vines, and it will change even more in the coming years.
