Product description for Clemens Busch Riesling Marienburg Grosses Gewächs “Falkenlay” 2021 (bio)
Info
The “Falkenlay” parcel lies between “Fahrlay” and “Rothenpfad.” The soil here is somewhat deeper and characterized by gray slate. This area was always considered the prime piece of the Marienburg vineyard by the old winemakers. Thanks to its special location, protected from the cold winds from the eastern mountain saddle, the grapes here always reach a particularly ripe level. The wines from the healthy grapes are fruity, creamy, and not only particularly rich, but also delicately mineral.
Colour
Bright straw yellow with golden and green reflections.
Nose
The 2021 Riesling Großes Gewächs from the Marienburg Falkenlay parcel exudes a cornucopia of fresh herbs upon first encounter. Lemon balm, sage, and parsley are at the forefront. Lemon thyme, coriander, and peppermint push forward from the background. It’s somewhat reminiscent of market visits on rainy days, or Frankfurt Green Sauce: delicious! With time and air, the lemongrass and coriander become even more pronounced. So, in addition to Frankfurt, a trip to the markets of Vietnam. Fennel, anise, and a touch of fennel seed give it rough edges in the same colour scheme. It displays depth and finesse. Wet stones present themselves alongside earthy spice, thus building a connection to its origins. Lemon, white peach, and unripe pear provide only a timid note of fruit.
Palate
Just like a cold mountain stream, it flows over the palate. Numerous wild herbs grow on its banks. That’s the first impression after a longed-for, hearty sip. It displays bite and grip. The typically pronounced phenolic structure of Clemens Busch’s wines is leading and groundbreaking. Rarely have I had the pleasure of tasting such a harmonious collection. In 2021, Clemens Busch set the bar for dry Mosel Rieslings quite high. Taut, challenging, sexy, and expansive. Fruit plays no real role. It’s all about depth, length, and aromatic maturity. Outstanding.

Score: 95
The 2021 Pündericher Marienburg Grosses Gewächs Falkenlay 2021 opens with gorgeous green citrus peel aromatics on the nose. The palate continues in the same vein, adding riper stone fruit and even a tropical fruit edge, countered by racy yet ripe freshness. On the long, exciting finish that tapers back to citrus, a lovely pithiness appears and the stony length becomes apparent. 7.5g/L of residual sweetness and 8.2g/L of acidity. (Dry)
