Product description for Claude Riffault Sancerre blanc “Monoparcelle 538” AOC 2023 (bio)
Wine Information
The wine comes from an unidentified 0.44-hectare plot. It is situated in a south-southeast exposure at an altitude of 260 meters. The vines are 47 years old and rooted in limestone marl soil, which meets a slab of Kimmeridge limestone at a depth of 30 cm. The oyster shell content is particularly high here. The grapes were harvested and sorted by hand, then very slowly pneumatically pressed. Clarification was carried out cool and by gravity. The juice fermented spontaneously and aged on the lees for 18 months in 600-liter multi-fill wooden barrels. No malo was performed in 2023 to preserve sufficient freshness after the hot summer. To guarantee this, the plot was also one of the first to be harvested.
Color
Light straw yellow.
Nose
The 2023 Sancerre “Monoparcelle 538,” like its sibling with the number 469, is an incredibly powerful Sauvignon Blanc that seems to have much more vibrancy and agility than the beautiful, calm, and measured previous vintage. Here, you have freshness and brightness, herbal spice, lichen on wet stone, seaweed, sea, then pepper-laced lemons, some pear cream, and just-ripened stone fruit.
Palate
On the palate, it’s pure excitement. Excitement and balance. There’s plenty of bright, fresh juice with clear, pure acidity and minerality. Where it used to be creamy, it’s now more silky, also salty and mouthwatering. The Sancerre has plenty of power and a piquant sharpness. So off it goes to the large glass, where, with aeration, the Sauvignon Blanc reveals even more maritime notes, but also a little more white-fleshed fruit and a hint of wood. A wine with great length and great potential.

Score: (94-96)
The 2023 Monoparcelle 538 is well held together and offers freshness and brightness. It was one of the first parcels to be harvested, and that keeps it together and energizing. It’s quite a contrast to the more open, calming 2022. Still undergoing its élevage in barrels, there’s still plenty of time for this to evolve, but it’s well structured, has lots of substance and is a wine for the future.
