Product description for Claude Riffault Sancerre blanc “Monoparcelle 469” AOC 2023 (bio)
Wine Information
The wine comes from an unnamed 0.35-hectare plot. It is southeast-facing at an altitude of 230 meters. The vines are 52 years old and rooted in shell limestone soil, which meets a slab of Kimmeridge limestone at a depth of 50 cm. The grapes were harvested and sorted by hand, then subjected to very slow pneumatic pressing. Clarification was carried out cool and by gravity. The juice fermented spontaneously and matured on the lees for 16 months in 600-liter multi-barrel wooden barrels. In 2023, no malo was performed to preserve sufficient freshness after the hot summer. To ensure this, the plot was also one of the first to be harvested.
Color
Light straw yellow.
Nose
This year’s Sancerre “Monoparcelle 469” presents itself significantly different from last year’s. While the 2023 vintage was a quieter, gentler wine, the 2023 is noticeably more bubbly. The wine’s aroma is clearly reminiscent of crisp apples, pears, greengage, lemons, and limes with a hint of elderflower and white currant. The typically creamy aroma is absent here. Instead, there is a light sea breeze and some crushed oyster shell.
Palate
This fresh impression is confirmed on the palate. Stéphane Riffault clearly responded to the warm summer and the heatwave at the beginning of the harvest, picking early and foregoing malo and bâtonnage. The result is a Sancerre with pure energy and vibrant minerality. The wine is juicy, salty, and mouthwatering, with plenty of power and juice, a piquant, tart spiciness, and a fine oak note. Tonic and blessed with great potential.

Score: (93-95)
The 2023 Monoparcelle 496 is a lot more tense than its predecessor. One of the first parcels to be harvested by Riffault, this barrel sample is taut and strict. Elderflower, fresh fruit, pear and apple combine and unlike some others, there’s no malo in this cuvée, retaining that tension. The finish is long and fragrant.
