Information about the Wine

The heart of the Ölberg vineyard, the Hart, lies around the Ölberg wayside chapel and is classified as a VDP Grosse Lage (VDP Grosse Gewächs). The soil is characterized by very heavy tertiary limestone marl, known as Terra Fusca. The topsoil is mixed with red sandstone scree. The vineyard is located high up on the edge of the Haardt, at the exit of the Klausental valley in the Palatinate Forest. This means it is exposed to the sun early in the morning, but just as early in the evening it is shaded by the mountains and bathed in a cool nightly breeze from the valley. Our auction wine “Kapelle” was produced in the Ölberg, the oldest part of the Hart vineyard, for a long time. Since 2020, the Christman winery has been producing the VDP Grosse Gewächs Ölberg-Hart from the entire vineyard.

100% selective hand-picking in small crates, spontaneous fermentation in large wooden barrels.

Colour

Sparkling golden yellow.

Nose

Due to its youth, the 2022 Königsbacher Ölberg initially presents itself somewhat closed, but its intense minerality, characterized by limestone, is immediately recognizable. With some contact with oxygen, fruity aromas reminiscent of pear, apple, and apricot emerge, along with distinct exotic notes of physalis, mango, pineapple, and kiwi. Fine white pepper notes, coriander, and mustard flour round out the complex aromatic spectrum.

Palate

Powerful and rich, it glides across the tongue. The juicy fruit notes, combined with a salty minerality and acidity, clearly emerge. The long finish is characterized by a stimulating bitter note that whets the appetite for a rich, aromatic accompaniment. Be sure to decant and enjoy from large glasses, not too cold.
