Product description for Charles Joguet Clos du Chêne Vert, Monopole AOC 2016 (bio)
Wine Information
The Clos du Chêne Vert lies on the right bank of the Vienne, not far from the center of Chinon. The vineyard extends to the top of the hill. The Clos is named after the enormous oak tree that dominates the vineyard and is said to have been planted by monks from Bourgueil in the 12th century. The vineyard itself covers two hectares and is much steeper than the Clos de la Dioterie. The soil is characterized by clay, lighter pebbles, and deep limestone. Due to the vineyard’s location on the opposite bank of the Vienne with a southerly exposure, this is always the one where the harvest begins. The Cabernet Franc undergoes a cool pre-fermentation at 10°C for ten days. The must fermentation in wooden vats lasts around four weeks at temperatures not exceeding 21°C. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the free-run wines and the best press wines are blended for malolactic fermentation. The French oak barrels are partially replaced each year, so that around a fifth of the barrels are new and one to four years old. The vintages then age in wood for 15 to 16 months, a further six months in tanks for harmonization, and are then bottled.
Colour
Slightly transparent garnet red with an initial brick-red rim.
Nose
Comparing the 2016 Clos du Chêne Vert with the Clos de la Dioterie from the same vintage, it appears much more discreet and understated. A touch of foliage, a hint of tomato leaves, peonies and violets combine here with some cherries and black olives.
Palate
On the palate, the wine blossoms, combining notes of cherries and olives with a light sweetness of extract and a still generous portion of firm tannins and tart notes of undergrowth, foliage, and stalks. Surprisingly, there’s nothing harsh about this Clos du Chêne Vert. It displays impressive subtlety and complexity, floral and spicy, polished with freshness and charm.
