Product description for Boris Champy Beaune 1er Cru Aux Coucherias AOP 2020 (bio)

Information about the wine

For this wine, Boris Champy used Pinot Noir from a west-facing plot in Aux Coucherias, just outside Bouze-lès-Beaune. The 1er Cru was planted in the 1950s; the site is very steep and characterized by dark clay and limestone. Champy knows the vineyard from his time with Louis Jadot; the house produced the Clos de Couchereaux there. In Champy’s case, it is the Clos Montchovet. The clos is isolated by trees and broom. The plot has been farmed biodynamically since 1985. The vine density is around 10,000, trained in the Guyot system. The harvest took place on August 12. Boris Champy fermented 60% of the grapes as whole clusters and aged them in barriques for twelve months.

Intense purple

Nose

Boris Champy’s Beaune 1er Cru Aux Coucherias 2020 is the wine that most clearly smells of black berries in its youth. Added to this are intense notes of ripe black cherries, plums, blackberries, and a slightly lactic note of creamy yogurt with black currants. The whole is rounded off with notes of vanilla, licorice, and a touch of dark chocolate.

Palate

On the palate, the Aux Coucherias is also juicy, slightly sweet, and creamy with the texture of liquid milk chocolate, notes of cinnamon and cherries with a hint of vanilla. It seems ripe and round, and it is, but nevertheless, and thankfully, the Pinot Noir remains lively and energetic. Thanks to the black berries, it also has structure and edge. This is a formidable, delicious wine!

Wine Advocate

Score: 93

The 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Coucherias is supple and suave, offering up aromas of sweet red berries, plums, orange rind, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and elegant, with lively acids, melting tannins and a long, cinnamon-inflected finish, it has turned out brilliantly.

Vinous

Score: (91-93)

The 2020 Beaune Aux Coucherias 1er Cru, from the climat that I can never pronounce correctly, includes 65% whole bunch, which is neatly disguised on the nose that offer dark plum, blackberry, briary and almost flinty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite edgy and tensile, a little angular in texture towards the finish with wonderful vitality and backbone. Again, there is an almost Pommard-like structure but there is still plenty of elegance here.
