Product description for Battenfeld-Spanier Riesling Hohen-Sülzen VDP Erste Lage 2023 (bio)
Wine Information
Hohen-Sülzen lies in the so-called Eisbach Valley; and as the name suggests, the cold low mountain stream, which originates in the Donnersberg massif, exerts a significant influence on the cooler nights. The difference between day and night temperatures is greater in Hohen-Sülzen than in the other districts.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
On the nose, the 2023 Hohensülzen Riesling reveals powerful stone fruit notes of apricots, mirabelle plums, and vineyard peach, underscored by earthy and stony notes that lend it a certain coolness and depth. Many herbal aromas enrich the fragrance and increase its complexity.
Palate
On the tongue, it packs a punch with juicy yellow fruit and citrus notes. Its structure is characterized by a fine grip and salty note, inspiring more with every sip. A Riesling with invigorating freshness, fantastic fruit, and depth, it’s just at the beginning of its development and will develop fantastically with further maturity.

The 2023 Hohen-Sülzen Riesling 1G is deep, intense and pure on the fine, saline and complex nose. Savory, saline and tensioned on the palate, this is a tight, fresh and terroir-driven (chalk!) Rheinhessen Riesling with a long, stimulating yet still youthful finish. This is a distinctive chalky Riesling with an accordingly fresh and finely biting tannin finish. It’s excellent but still very (or even too) young. 12% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Hohen-Sülzen was harvested early. Usually made from the Sonnenberg and Kirchenstück parcels, it comes mainly from the Kirchenstück this year, as Sonnenberg was hit by hail. A touch of flint plays alongside citrus and crunchy apple, brimming with fruit and lemony brightness. This has a beautifully light and tart body with an immense refreshment factor in all its juiciness. (Bone-dry)
