Wine Information

The 2020 Paso Las Mañas comes from the 3.9-hectare Paraje El Chorro vineyard in Samaniego. Arturo and Kike planted the vineyard around ten years ago at an altitude of 720 meters. It’s already too cool for Graciano there, which is why this is a 100% Tempranillo vineyard, completely isolated and characterized by almost pure limestone. De-stemmed grapes were used, which fermented spontaneously. The wine then aged for over a year in 3,500-liter foudres and was bottled unfiltered. It is listed as a Premier Cru among Artuke’s single-vineyard wines.

Nose

The 2020 Paso Las Mañas is by far the most closed and cool wine in the portfolio. No wonder, given the vineyard’s altitude, the barren soil, and the cool vintage. At the same time, the Rioja appears fascinating in its blend of barberries, pomegranate, and sour cherries, crushed limestone and maquis herbs, damp earth, and undergrowth.

Palate

On the palate, Paso Las Mañas is pure life, but in a very unique way. There’s plenty of cherry, some blueberry and cassis, then plenty of herbs and even more crushed rock, a vibrant acid structure, and incredibly fine tannins, which are very typical of the winery. From the outset, the wine appears salty and tonic, cool on the one hand, yet charming on the other, with a subtle sweetness at its core. It’s young, still somewhat shy, but blessed with dazzling potential and plenty of energy!

The 2020s feel very elegant, and the 2020 Paso Las Mañas, which mentions the Paraje El Chorro in Samaniego where the vines are, is no exception. It has a very lively palate that is effervescent with freshness and chalky minerality, leaving a dry sensation that is very tasty, almost salty. It’s young-ish Tempranillo that achieved 13.5% alcohol and kept a pH of 3.42, meaning moderate ripeness, a medium body and very good freshness—a constant across the 2020s. 6,000 bottles were filled in January 2022 after 12 months in 3,500-liter foudre.
