Product description for Artadi El Carretil 2022 (bio)
Information about the Wine
Bodegas Artadi is one of Spain’s absolute top addresses and has pioneered the transition from cellar-influenced to terroir-influenced wines in Rioja. The organically certified single-vineyard wine “El Carretil” comes from a 3.5-hectare, south-facing vineyard at an altitude of around 500 meters in the municipality of Laguardia. The 37- to 95-year-old Tempranillo vines grow on heavily calcareous soil with a high calcium carbonate content. As with all Artadi wines, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously. During aging, the winery increasingly relies on used and larger oak barrels, which gives the wines even greater clarity and unvarnished elegance.

Nose
The El Carretil 2022 is characterized by a cool minerality. The nose is (at this point in time) austere, definitely Bauhaus rather than Baroque, following the motto “less is more”: less wood and less maturity ultimately result in more finesse and precision. Subtle smoky and balsamic notes, blue and red fruits emerge in the background. The overall picture is a straightforward, compelling, and highly attractive nose.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is silky and juicy, with the finest tannins and a slightly smoky minerality. The El Carretil 2022 develops incredible grip in the mouth; it is almost crisp, and one can attribute an infinite number of positive qualities to it: clarity, tension, freshness, depth, and elegance. Overall, this wine displays a great deal of character and personality. And as befits an absolute top wine, the finely spicy finish is super long and balanced.

Score: 96
The bottled 2022 El Carretil still shows faint notes of toast, but they are a lot more integrated than last year. Of all their vineyards, this one has more active limestone, and the palate has marked chalkiness and what Carlos López de la Calle calls “reactive” tannins, along with energy and a sensation of freshness. It was bottled with 14.68% alcohol, a pH of 3.57 and 4.95 grams of acidity. 6,000 bottles were filled in June 2024.

Score: 95
The 2022 El Carretil is a deep purple hue and presents restrained aromas of blueberry and forest floor. The limestone-rich site reins in the fruit, yielding a savory and mature profile. An elevated chalky texture, slight compactness and refined ripeness define the palate to produce a composed, nuanced and flavorful red with persistence and precision.
