Product description for Albert Mann Riesling Furstentum Grand Cru 2020 (bio)
Wine Information
The Furstentum vineyard is nestled in the wind-protected valley of Kaysersberg and Sigolsheim. It is a 30.5-hectare south-southwest-facing site with brown, calcareous, skeletal soil, a limestone-marl-sandstone terroir from the Middle Jurassic, covered on the surface with Tertiary conglomerates. The gradient is very steep at 37%. The vineyard was mentioned as early as 1330 in the wine inventory of a Basel monastery. The vines are around 30 years old.
Colour
Medium straw yellow
Nose
The 2020 Riesling Grand Cru Furstentum is as intense, as powerful, and at the same time as clear and precise as one would expect from the site, but also from the winemaker. 2020 is certainly a particularly fine, delicate, and harmonious vintage, expressed in crystal-clear citrus and orange fruit, fresh stone fruit, grapes, and a hint of petrol, stone, and petrichor.
Palate
On the palate, the Fürstentum appears full and intense, silky and creamy, lively as well as salty, and offers a fine grip. Indeed, with its tight acid structure and salty components, light stone and stone fruit, as well as the juice and tart, piquant peel of limequats, the wine seems as complex as the terroir from which it originates. It is a highly complex Grand Cru that is still in its infancy, yet already offers great pleasure if given a few hours of breathing room.

Score: 93+
The 2020 Riesling Grand Cru Furstentum is intense but very clear and delicate on the aromatic nose that intermingles pure terroir and stone notes with perfectly clear and ripe, bright Riesling aromas. On the palate, this is a silky, lush and firm, finely tannic, complex and powerful Riesling with a long and intense finish. The 2020 is very promising but still very young and will need either to be aerated hours before or cellared for two or three more years. The wine is tightly woven, lemony and saline on the finish and really compact. Clearly, it’s a late starter. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.

The 2020 Riesling is made from three plots on the mid-slope of the Furstentum Grand Cru, on limestone. The nose brims with lifted hayflower and wild thyme. The palate has the inherent coolness of limestone, in complete contrast to the sunny ripeness of the fruit, a wonderful counterpoint of hot sun and cool stone, made mouth-watering with the flavor of salted lemon. The chalky stoniness becomes even more apparent on the finish. Hair-raising stuff with no residual sweetness at all. (Bone-dry)
