Product description for Albert Mann Pinot Noir Clos de la Faille AC 2022 (bio)

Domaine Albert Mann is the merger of two great winemaking families: the Mann family, who have been growing wine since the early 17th century, and the Barthelmé family, the current owners, who have been active in winemaking since 1654. Located in Wettolsheim on the Alsace Wine Route, each plot of the 25-hectare estate is individually cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles. The monopole vineyard covers one hectare and is located not far from the Grand Cru Hengst. It is the only clos in Alsace planted 100% with Pinot Noir. The upper part of the vineyard contains pebbles of pink Vosges sandstone, Buntsandstein, and calcareous sandstone. In the middle are fine-grained gray Muschelkalk and yellow Jurassic limestone pebbles. At the base of the vineyard, there is a mixture of Vosges sandstone and white and pink quartz. The vines were planted in 1998.

Colour

Transparent ruby red with garnet shimmer.

Nose

Despite its transparent colour, the 2022 Clos de la Faille Pinot Noir from Albert Mann is powerful on the nose, with earthy aromas and a deep bass. Undergrowth, forest floor, dark tobacco, and spices such as black cardamom and allspice are the olfactory leitmotif, even before the fruit makes its presence felt. Wild raspberries, cherries, and pale mulberries, as well as blood orange zest alongside juniper and cinnamon blossoms. A colourful nose from the first cabin.

Palate

Something is happening on the palate: there is wild chaos, like a Neapolitan intersection where someone has turned off the traffic lights. Left-hand traffic slams into the middle of the intersection without honking; right-turning vehicles are irritated and head toward oncoming traffic. Pedestrians say their last prayers and remember the last sip: A wild jumble of fresh acidity despite the warm year, plus a grippy phenolic texture, undermined by brash fruit with a megaphone. A striking minerality paves the scene and leaves the scene with a chillingly chilling aftertaste. The traffic light is off again.

Wine Advocate

Score: 92

The 2022 Pinot Noir Clos de la Faille opens with a refined or even noble and very elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe fruits (black berries and sour cherries) intermingled with delicate spice, toast and even flinty terroir aromas. On the palate, this is a silky, fresh and refined, savory and finely tannic Pinot from 24-year-old vines that shows an elegant and linear finish with remarkably fine and serious tannins and a stimulating savoriness. The clos was picked in two days—September 6 and 9. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.
The Clos de la Faille is a one-hectare plot planted with seven different genetics (clonal and massal selections) on three or four different rootstocks. The grapes were handpicked and fermented with 15% whole clusters for 10-14 days, without pigèage. Barreled in November, the wine was allowed to mature for 19 months with just one racking after malolactic fermentation in June 2023. The first SO2 was added three or four days later (two to three milligrams). The total SO2 is a moderate 35 milligrams per liter.

Score: 95

The 2022 Pinot Noir Clos de la Faille Monopole is from an iron-rich limestone site. The ferment contained around 15% of whole bunches and had a total cuvaison of 12 days, with no pigeage, just gentle remontage. This matured for 16 months in pièce, of which 15% were new and racked once after malolactic fermentation, followed by another winter in the barrel. Aromatic, ripe red cherry is underlined by the gentlest notion of vanilla and a trace of smokiness. Seamless, smooth tannins immediately impress with their silkiness, while a pristine cherry note shines with ripeness, precision and superb, bright freshness. Equilibrium and elegance define this. The 2022 is world-class, sinuous and exquisite.
