Score: 94

At an extreme 234 grams of residual sugar the Barthelmes’ 2008 Pinot Gris Altenbourg Selection De Grains Nobles Le Tri nonetheless harbors 9% alcohol, so one realizes that it could easily have captured the character of an Esszencia but continued fermenting beyond that point. It smells like the essence of botrytis secretion, pear nectar, and effusively floral honey, with orange marmalade, peach preserves, and brown spices chiming-in on an unctuous yet rivetingly bright palate. This penetrates with an energy suggesting that, properly-wired, it could power small appliances. It should be capable of enervating, enlightening, and at the same time texturally caressing your palate for the better part of three decades, and possibly beyond. _x000D_

Although Maurice and Jacky Barthelme continued to pick their 2009 Rieslings into October and achieved satisfyingly ripe flavors, they did so without suffering high alcohol or unbalanced sweetness. Unsurprisingly (whether or not verifiably), they implicate the accumulated experience and effects of a biodynamic regimen in these results. Equally importantly, the levels of acidity in their 2009 Rieslings are ample and efficacious. With Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, they were forced to discharge high must weights in the form of almost universally high residual sugar, with attractive if seldom distinguished results. The Mann 2008s are characterized by particularly concentrated and positively efficacious acidity, all of the Rieslings weighing-in at what on paper might look like an excessive 9 grams or more. Not only have the Barthelme brothers been together now for 21 vintages – to me it still seems like yesterday that I “discovered” their 1988s – but they point out that most of their present crew has been together for nearly a decade, which is bound to have been instrumental in their having been able to repeatedly expand into new vineyards without sacrificing the highest standards, not to mention with their enthusiasm still youthful._x000D_

Vinous

Score: 95

(9% alcohol, 234 g/l r.s. and 6.5 acidity) Pale orange-gold color. High-toned, rot-drenched aromas of orange, fresh apricot, honey, mint, resin, spices and tobacco. Superconcentrated and dense, with superb lift and verve to its silky, opulent flavors of fruit salad, caramel and honey. This shows a completely different balance than the 2009: though lower in acidity, it tastes more vibrant and bracing, perhaps because there’s so much less alcohol here. Almost painfully intense on the extremely long, suave, energetic back end.
