Product description for Cà la Bionda Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2017 (bio)
Info
The 2017 cuvée consists of 70% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, and 10% Rondinella and Molinara. The soils consist largely of a mixed limestone-clay soil with tuff and a good portion of skeletal soils. The altitude, and thus the temperature, of the hilly vineyards varies between 300 meters above sea level. The vineyards face south and southeast. Only loose-berried grapes that have been exposed to a high amount of sunlight are considered for Amarone production. The drying process takes place after the harvest from late September to December in small wooden crates. During this period, each grape loses approximately 40% of its weight. Fermentation then takes place in steel tanks before the wine is allowed to age for 42 months in large 3000-liter wooden vats.
Color
Dark cherry red with light and brown reflections.
Nose
The nose is unmistakable and reflects its style. Dark fruit, concentrated and dense. Blueberry, black cherry, blackberry, and plum come together. Some dried fruit appears in the form of plum, date, and raisin. Not at all heavy-handed, but wonderfully balanced. It has a cool and elegant effect, as can only be achieved with Ca la Bionda. A touch of tar and warm car tires complements it perfectly. Juniper, black pepper, and plenty of rosemary. Licorice exudes dark and green nuances. It reminds me in the best way of my own rum pot creations. Top-quality products made from fruit, sugar, and rum are a given, of course.
Palate
And on the palate, it is a seamless success. Despite all the fruit, density, and concentration, it thrives on a racy acid structure. This cuts through the luscious fruit again and again. It is incredibly juicy and cool. This literally gives it wings and makes its 16% ABV seem “light as a feather” – in the context of an Amarone. The fruit is berry-like and delicate in the finish. Its subtle spice of pepper, licorice, and rosemary remains with me for a long time.
