Information about the wine

For Martin Muthenthaler, the Vießlinger Stern is actually his flagship vineyard and his monopoly site for both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. However, the Vießlinger Stern does not appear on the vineyard maps. Today, the Stern is considered a sub-vineyard of the Bruck vineyard. The site, with its more than 60 parcels, is still small and difficult to access. Muthenthaler’s oldest vines, 35+ years old, are located there. The parcel is characterized by orthogneiss and mica schist. The Grüner Veltliner was aged on the full lees after spontaneous fermentation in a single 600-liter barrel.

Nose

When you smell the glass, you can’t help but wonder if you just happened to have poured a Burgundy Chardonnay. It smells like it, especially a Chardonnay like this, which has been aged on the full lees in wood with a hint of oxidation, often bringing with it a very unique spiciness that this Vießlinger Stern also possesses. Spice, yellow and white-fleshed fruits, herbs, a hint of vanilla, and a clear, yet restrained wood add complexity.

Palate

On the palate, the typicality of Grüner Veltliner becomes clear with its characteristic slightly vegetal spiciness, which combines with ripe, elegant, and juicy fruit and is permeated by crystal-clear acidity. The wine offers body, but remains lean, straightforward, very structured and precise, which is not only due to Martin Muthenthaler’s work, but also to the vintage, in which the wine has an alcohol content of 12% by volume and shows a lot of finesse, especially in the salty, citrusy finish, over which there is a distinct floral note, slightly reminiscent of violets.
