At the age of 23, Majorie Gallet wandered through Roussillon in search of vineyards. She came across ancient Carignan vines that reminded her of the Côte Rôtie, where she grew up. The Carignan grew on a white quartz vein, the Roc Blanc, in the middle of a black slate slope. Renamed Roc des Anges (Angel Rock), it became the nucleus of her estate in 2001, and the Carignan became the nucleus of her rapid fame in 1903. After eight years with her husband Stéphane managing the Mas Amiel in Maury, the two agricultural engineers began concentrating together in 2008 on their steadily growing number of old vineyards, to which they added Maury’s Les Terres de Fagayra. Working biodynamically, the two aim to capture their terroirs, following the motto “The essence is in nature, the place gives the wine its energy, the light of Roussillon illuminates but does not burn.” Today, they produce their wines on their farm near Latour-de-France, where they also keep their beloved horses.
