Product description for Clemens Busch Riesling Marienburg Grosses Gewächs “Fahrlay Terrassen” 2021 (bio)
Info
The “Fahrlay” area covers an area of approximately one hectare and, as the name suggests, is located directly next to the Pünderich ferry landing in a purely south-facing location. It is the only area in the Pünderich Marienburg where blue slate dominates. The particularly stony subsoil forces the vines to obtain water and nutrients from deeper layers. The wines are extremely concentrated and characterized by a special minerality. The oldest parcel in this area is our “Fahrlay Terrace” with approximately 100-year-old vines. The grapes here have particularly small berries and are very healthy.
Colour
Bright lemon yellow with clear, light inclusions.
Nose
In 2021, Clemens Busch achieved a truly great success. This Großes Gewächs from the Fahrlay terraces within Marienburg Castle stands sublime in the glass. At first glance, it appears more classically rooted in its grape variety and region than many other Busch wines these days. Lemon zest, kaffir lime, and white peach are not unusual aromatics. It has a slight Far Eastern touch, reminiscent of Southeast Asian cuisine. Lemongrass, mint, and coriander prevail. Paired with lemon balm, lemon thyme, and sage, it’s a successful blend that combines coolness and finesse. White pepper, as well as roasted fennel and coriander seeds, provide a subtle spiciness.
Palate
On the palate, it reaches its peak. It hits the palate like a fine, strong jet, setting a new standard in precision. The active acidity marries its stony, cool, almost salty character to create a monument of elegance. The fruit completely fades into the background. It thrives on density, character, punch, and length. The aromatic expression of the nose is perfectly reflected in the finish. Its omnipresent yet refreshing herbal spice characterizes the finish. Eucalyptus and coriander are particularly prominent here.

Score: 96
The 2021 Pündericher Marienburg Grosses Gewächs Fahrlay Terrassen opens with yeasty reduction giving way to a beautifully pure, ripe, intense Amalfi lemon tone. The palate continues in this same vivid fashion – tingling, intense, incisive, memorable. This is a bullet of Riesling intensity, exploding with citrus and echoing long while remaining absolutely streamlined. Only in the Mosel… Residual sweetness is 7.3g/L, and 8g/L of acidity. (Dry)
