Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Riesling “Im Sonnenschein” GG 2020 (bio)The ‘Im Sonnenschein’ vineyard site was created by the subsidence of the Rhine Graben and the resulting uplift of the Palatinate Forest. As a result, deep-lying geological formations from the Triassic period emerged around Siebeldingen around 220 million years ago. The soils here are predominantly Muschelkalk; the vineyards are located at an elevation of 180 to 225 m above sea level and are planted with a purely south-facing slope of 5 to 20%. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed and, after 24 hours of maceration, fermented in steel tanks.

Light yellow, radiant and clear.

Nose

The 2020 Im Sonnenschein Riesling Großes Gewächs from Ökonomierat Rebholz is always deeply citrusy when young: lemon zest and the white of the fruit mingle with profound mineral notes. Wet blackboard chalk, rock flour, and ground oyster shells always give it a sparse and skeletal nose in its juvenile stage. Closed, this sketch of a wine currently reveals additional tart accents reminiscent of savory and sage.

Palate

Citrus and tart on the palate, grapefruit, salt, and its distinctive phenolics dominate, enveloping the acidity in a velvety finish. This stylistically warm wine with a rough texture is also aromatically reminiscent of citrus and sage with its animating bitter notes—a wine like a block from which the sculpture has yet to be carved. Full-bodied on the palate with a long, warm finish and subtle herbal spice in the aftertaste.
