Product description for Nikolaihof Klausberg Riesling Privatreserve trocken 2005 (bio)
Archive Release 2024. The “Klause” is a plot within the Steiner “Gaisberg,” and therefore not an official vineyard. Named after the hermitage there, the small, terraced “Klause” encompasses the uppermost part of the 5.7 hectares of the Gaisberg. The Gaisberg vineyard lies at an altitude of 230 to 330 meters above sea level at the peak and crest of the mountain, facing southeast and with good ventilation. The subsoil is composed of Gföhl gneiss, mica schist, and amphibolite. The vineyard name has been documented since 1215. The Klause is largely surrounded by forest, creating a special microclimate.
Colour
Deep golden saffron yellow
Nose
The exciting bouquet arouses curiosity even upon first contact. Rich exotic aromas, star fruit, lychee, dried mango pieces, and butter-browned pineapple characterize the rich fragrance. This fruit-laden scent remains unchanged for a long time, but is then complemented by spicy notes, star anise, saffron, curry, and lemongrass.
Palate
Matured with dignity, with a dense texture and tannins that sustain the entire wine. A slight salinity joins the mineral aspects. Density and fullness on the palate are accompanied by refinement and depth, while the ripe, apple-like acidity ensures a fresh, long, and delicious finish. A true family reserve!

Not from the Wachau but the neighboring Kremstal (the upper part of the Steiner Gaisberg to be precise) comes the 2005 Klausberg Riesling Privatreserve. This bottle is pretty matured and developed, indicated by the dark golden color as well as the nose that is elegant and finely flinty but also shows dried and matured (tropical) stone fruit aromas such as apricots, peaches, mangoes and pineapples along with brioche and saffron notes. The wine is intense as well as delicate on the palate and not bone dry. It is less mineral and tensioned than the 2008 and 2012 re-releases. It is a rather light but textured Riesling with finesse and fine tannin grip yet a lack of drama on the finish. It is a fine but rather small wine that has aged with honor. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
