Wine Information

The Les Quarts vineyard is undoubtedly one of the best terroirs in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The beautifully situated vineyard faces southeast and is planted with 48- to 80-year-old Chardonnay vines on siliceous, and especially iron-rich, clay and limestone soils from the Bajocian region (Jura). The wines produced here are long-lasting, balanced. Hand-harvested from August 24 to 25, 2020, whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation, followed by aging for 17 months, first in pièces for 11 months and then in foudres with 100% malolactic fermentation. The added sulphur is 20 mg/l.

Colour

Light golden yellow

Nose

The 2020 Les Quarts Cuvée Zen is aromatically close to the classic cuvée from the same vineyard. Here, too, citrus notes combine with those of pencil shavings, stone, and herbs. Overall, the Zen version appears somewhat cooler, tending more from yellow to green than to orange. In addition to the fruit and herbs, one can easily detect a celery stalk, some verbena, and tobacco.

Palate

On the palate, the wine proves to be incredibly powerful and almost wiry in its acidity structure, which provides momentum and provokes an electrifying moment on the tongue. This is more than remarkable, given that the Chardonnay underwent 100% malolactic fermentation, and 2020 was not a cool year, but rather a moderate one at best. This is also evident in the juiciness of the fruit. Yet, the wine still has the right punch. Added to this is a delicate silkiness, not least due to the long lees aging, which also makes its presence felt aromatically. With only a very subtle sulphur content, the wine appears open, harmonious, and inviting.
