Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Auxerrois Rotenberg 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: My grandfather, Emile Zind, loved this vineyard, located on the western slope of the Grand Cru Hengst on a barren, rocky red limestone site and opposite a beautiful forest. It’s a peaceful spot where the grapes grow slowly. The oldest part of the vineyard was planted in the early 1950s. For many years, the Rotenberg grapes were blended, but since 2021, we truly believe they deserve to be vinified separately. As with most of the 2022 wines, fermentation was very slow, but the wine was aged dry.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The light fruity aromas on the nose are extremely stimulating; alongside quince, pear, fresh grapes, and lemon, we encounter salted butter, dried pastries, oyster shell, and almonds. A chalky note underlines the whole, lending it depth, while the scent of grapefruit and lemon zest evokes freshness and playfulness.
Palate
On the palate, the 2022 Auxerrois Rotenberg surprises with cool finesse and invigorating freshness. It practically glides across the tongue with a salty hint and the finest acidity, while its fine tannin in the finish stimulates the appetite. In general, it pairs fantastically with a variety of dishes; vegan and vegetarian dishes are also a trump card here. A wise decision to vinify the grape variety separately.

Wine Advocate
Score: 94
The 2022 Rotenberg Wintzenheim Auxerrois is from a west-facing slope on reddish conglomerate limestone and offers a deep, pure, intense and generous, fully aromatic as well as spicy, terroir-driven and even iodine and flinty nose that also reveals fennel seeds, cumin and other spices plus ripe apricots. Full-bodied, elegant and powerful on the palate, this a rich but bone dry and firmly structured Auxerrois from old vines planted in 1992 and the 1950s. Fermented in a 1,750-liter foudre, the still slightly reductive wine has remarkable acidity and a fine phenolic structure. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

Score: 92
The 2022 Auxerrois Rotenberg is grown on a west-facing site, one part planted in the late 1950s, another part in the early 1990s, in limestone with weathered sandstone and some marl. The wine usually went into the basic Pinot Blanc despite having been vinified separately, but finally, the Humbrechts decided to bottle it separately. “We were a bit surprised by the ripeness, but this is down to the low yields from the old vines and their old genetics,” Humbrecht notes. A berry-like juiciness of plump white currant, juicy, yellow gooseberry and fresh plum marks the palate, along with a touch of hazelnut from oak. The palate is rich, concentrated, fluid and beautifully fresh and balanced. There’s exceptional concentration here, with a gentle, zesty texture and roundness but perfectly countering freshness with proper length. (Bone-Dry)
