Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl 2023 (bio)Clos Windsbuhl looks back on a long history with Pinot Gris – the cultivation of this type, known as “Tokay,” was documented there as early as 1759. Then as now, it is clear: this grape variety needs a great terroir to develop its full potential. The limestone-rich shell limestone soil of the Clos, combined with the south- to southeastern exposure and moderate slope, offers precisely these prerequisites – low yields, fine acidity, and deep structure. 2023 was such a year: the grapes remained healthy and concentrated, and botrytis-free musts allowed for complete fermentation. The 54-year-old vines produced a yield of 53 hl/ha. Aging on the full lees in large oak barrels lasted until bottling in January 2025.
Colour
Intense straw yellow with slightly rusty reflections.
Nose
The nose of the 2023 Clos Windsbuhl Pinot Gris from Zind-Humbrecht is initially hesitant. Some stone fruit and wet stone characterize it rather indifferently – until it slowly begins to sing with increasing aeration. The apples develop rosy cheeks, accompanied by blossoms such as chestnut or acacia, green almonds, and mild spices such as mace. The whole appears ripe and yet incredibly close together – nothing traditionally baroque, but rather freshly renovated New School.
Palate
Viscous, dense, and full of tension, yet complex with great inner tension and a saline backbone – attributes rarely attributed to a Pinot Gris. The year 2023 proved to be a stroke of luck for the variety, allowing for this multi-layered wine, bone dry with comparatively high acidity and tremendous aromatic balance. A clear case for the wine cellar: This Pinot Gris will develop excellently over the next 15 years.
