Nose

As with so many of Martin Muthenthaler’s wines, this one also requires a carafe, air, and patience to do it justice. Initially, this Riesling descends through citrus groves of various kinds. The juice and zest of grapefruit and the flesh of honey pomelo shine, as do the freshness of kaffir lime leaves and the ethereal depth of bergamot. Physalis and yellow apple modestly join in. Herbal aromas of nasturtium, lemon balm, and dried ginger also succumb to the dizziness, keeping the nose glued to the glass.

Palate

The 2017 Riesling Vießlinger Stern from Martin Muthenthaler makes a simple yet undeniable statement on the palate, one that reads almost exactly as this sentence begins: Vießlinger Stern from Martin Muthenthaler! This is (through the medium of the vine, in this case Riesling) a purist documentation of its origins and the yearly course of its winemaking in the unmistakable signature of the winemaker who accompanied these grapes on their journey to discover their destiny. In other words: Yellow-fleshed wallpaper lines the throat and dries stony, while subtle phenolics, along with crystalline acidity, imbue this Riesling with freshness. Clear. Long. Big.
