Product description for Hajszan Neumann Grüner Veltliner Nussberg 2023 (bio)
Info
The 2023 vintage saw a particularly long and wet winter. Bud break only began in May. Spring then brought warm temperatures, allowing the grapes to catch up on the season and finally flowering in mid-June. The summer began very warm and dry. In August, cool, wet weather surprised us and ended with drier weather but significantly cooler nights. A large wave of hail followed at the end of August, but without major damage to the winery. At the start of the harvest in early September, the sun again brought glorious weather and ensured very well-ripened grapes. The last day of the harvest was already on October 12th. The vines are spread across two plots in Vienna’s Nussberg: Ried Weusleiten and Ried Haarlocke. The soil contains calcareous shell limestone and limestone in the subsoil. The harvest is followed by a six-hour maceration period before gentle pressing. The pre-clarified must is then spontaneously fermented in stainless steel with natural yeasts. After fermentation, it matures on the fine lees.
Colour
Bright straw yellow with light reflections
Nose
It slowly but surely develops in the glass. It is endowed with plenty of local fruit, but can do so much more. Yellow plum, mirabelle plum, apricot, and peach lead the way. Nashi pear and quince take it to another level of aromas. Behind these, more complex layers of aroma emerge. Plenty of oolong tea and fresh herbal infusion, jasmine blossom, and orchid. The Nussberg wine thrives on the finest herbal spice, which goes wonderfully with a hint of white pepper and coriander seed. Fennel and artichoke provide subtle vegetal accents. Mint, lemongrass, and coriander also provide sufficient freshness.
Palate
It places itself powerfully on the palate, but by no means heavy. The fruit is important, but not overtly present. It strikes a strong balance between the aromas and components. Its acidity takes over from the second sip. Only a delicate melt underlines it, but this is continually broken up. It maintains its complexity until the end. It thrives on length and benefits from its unpretentious nature. It seems completely at peace and lingers on the palate for minutes.
