Olivier Humbrecht: In 2021, we added 1 hectare of Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg from Katzenthal. These old vines were brought to the winery by the current vineyard manager, Jérôme Noll. This Grand Cru is located on various hills with varying exposures, from southeast to south, some on very steep slopes. The soil is similar to that of Brand and Sommerberg: biotite granite (two mica). Wineck-Schlossberg is not located at the end of a deep valley like Brand, so the microclimate is perhaps more extreme, with cold and warm periods throughout the year. However, the proximity to the mountains ensures cooler evening temperatures and a lower risk of sunburn. In 2022, the grapes were in their second year of organic and biodynamic conversion. It really is a beautiful little Grand Cru, but unfortunately it was hit by a severe hailstorm in mid-August. We lost a lot of grapes, but what remained produced a beautiful wine. Fermentation was relatively rapid compared to other vineyards, and the wine was dry before the summer of 2023.

Nose

The 2022 Riesling Wineck-Schlossberg is a small and beguiling Grand Cru; the aroma reveals citrus fruits, lemon zest, lemon thyme, peach, and juicy orange. A beguiling potpourri of fruit framed by the slender, precise clarity and finesse of the granite soil on which it was grown.

Palate

Dry and demandingly powerful, it grips the palate with invigorating acidity and salty intensity. What a wonderful drop we have in the glass. A purity and power that offers tremendous aging potential and pairs perfectly with dishes with fresh, citrusy notes. Fantastic! Be sure to decant and enjoy from a larger glass, not too cold.

From 40+-year-old vines in the third year of conversion to organic and picked three or four days after the Brand, the inaugural 2022 Wineck-Schlossberg Katzenthal Riesling opens with a deep, intense and densely aromatic, fresh and complex bouquet with stony and lemon chutney aromas. Full-bodied, rich and generous on the palate, this is a powerful yet texturally refined and elegant Riesling with a very complex taste, robust tannins and a long, intense and powerful finish. The vines yielded 21 hectoliters per hectare. 13.56% alcohol. Natural cork. 1,900 bottles produced. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

The 2022 Riesling Wineck-Schlossberg Grand Cru is on granite, rather steep, facing south-south-east in a narrower, more shaded valley. This is the first year this wine was made. An employee supplies the grapes. The vineyard is still in conversion. More than half of the grapes were lost to a hailstorm in August, so only 21 hl/ha was harvested. Smoke and a tropical overtone of mango flickers on the nose, touching on pineapple. The palate is superbly juicy and has that unimpeded, clear-cut brightness of granite and stony, unmitigated, salty, mouth-watering acidity. It finishes with slightly pithy zestiness. (Bone-Dry)
