Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Roche Granitique 2018 (bio)
Wine Info
This “new” wine label complements the “Roches” series. As the name suggests, all the vineyards are located on the granite soils of the Grand Cru Brand. This wine is, in fact, the “second” wine of our Grand Cru brand, produced from the youngest vines there. Youngest, yes, on average 36 years old, because the oldest vines are much older and produce a very different wine! In 2018, we also added the very small production of the young vines of the Sommerberg Grand Cru, planted in 2013. I did not change the average age of the vines, as it represents less than ten percent of the total volume. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Vineyard Info
In 2018, the grapes ripened quickly and achieved perfect balance. It wasn’t easy for the vines, but the stress was under control. The 2018 wine fermented very slowly but maintained a steady pace and finished dry. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Colour
Bright and dense golden yellow with delicate lightening towards the rim.
Nose
The 2018 Riesling Roche Granitique pleasantly tickles and provokes the nose with intense, fresh fruit, reminiscent of an entire fruit basket filled with exotic delicacies—such as citrus, orange, lime, fresh pineapple, mango, and passion fruit. This brilliant fruit is topped with fresh ginger, lemongrass, pronounced stony minerality, and liquid honey. A very open and intense wine that promises depth and substance even on the nose.
Palate
The fruitiness of the nose seems to literally unleash itself on the palate, with density, delicate fruit sweetness, and precise acidity beautifully embedded in its exotic richness. The fine tannins and the associated delicately tart impression make this an excellent accompaniment to food. Despite its open appearance, it has excellent storage and development potential for the coming years. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses.

Score: 90
Humbrecht’s 2018 Riesling Roche Granitique is mostly young-vine wine from Brand with a bit of Sommerberg thrown into the mix. Bright and taut in the glass, the Roche Granitique is a dry, bracing wine built on vertical energy. Lemon oil, white flowers and mineral tones all grace this steely Riesling from granite soils. I would cellar the 2018 to see if some of the more angular contours soften a bit.
