Wine Info

Olivier Humbrecht: About 10 years ago, we decided to remove the Gewürztraminer grapes planted on the east-facing part of the Hengst Grand Cru. These grapes were never used for the Grand Vin. The clonal selections used at the time never produced a wine that matched the complexity of the old vines. After 30 vintages and major problems with strain diseases, we finally gave up. Nowadays, as the climate has evolved, Riesling was an obvious choice on the red limestone of the Hengst (Pinot Noir would certainly have been another).

Vintage Info

In 2016, we planted a large selection of our old Riesling vines from Brand. The 2021 vintage is the first and impressive presentation of this wine. We vinified this vineyard separately from previous vintages and were able to observe the character and development of the wines, which always exhibit great acidity and precision!

Colour

Brilliant golden yellow.

Nose

Pure minerality and deep concentration dominate its nose; with sufficient oxygen contact, we find aromas of orange, orange zest, and grapefruit wedges combined with bergamot, dried oyster shells, and soy sauce. Pure umami is already evident in the aroma.

Palate

On the palate, the 2021 Hengst literally explodes with razor-sharp acidity, which immediately stimulates saliva flow. Its salty character settles on the tongue like a carpet and leads into an endless finish characterized by pronounced spiciness and a grippy tannin structure. A precise and almost fleshy wine that will only reveal its full beauty in a few years. Several days of opening will allow it to develop. It has outstanding ageing potential. Be sure to decant and enjoy it from a larger glass, not too cold.
