Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Windsbuhl 2022 (bio)
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: In 2022, the Riesling-grafted vines began to bear fruit, giving Riesling cultivation a more prominent place at the Clos. We suspect that in the 1950s and 1960s, Riesling ripening wasn’t as evident in every vintage, but today, benefiting from the cooler, late-ripening climate of the Windsbuhl is a clear advantage for producing elegant and racy wines. The upper part of the Clos, where the soils are shallower and the limestone bedrock lies close to the surface (we struggle to drive stakes into the vineyard!), was planted with Pinot Gris in 1990. We decided to graft these vines with Riesling in 2021, and the result the following year was very interesting: not yet in full production, but with all the characteristics of a 32-year-old vineyard! As usual, Clos Windsbuhl was the last Riesling to be harvested in 2022. The wine fermented very slowly and without interruption to dry in the summer of 2023. Bottled from large oak barrels and on the fine lees.
Colour
Bright golden yellow.
Nose
The 2022 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is a delicate masterpiece, with apple, peach, chalky notes, honeydew melon, and salted lemon opening the palate. It demands the decanter, then reveals dried ginger and a hint of anise; its complexity is challenging, refreshing, and utterly beguiling.
Palate
Distinctive, very dry, and incredibly taut with crystalline saltiness and razor-sharp acidity, it hits the tongue and immediately sets the saliva flowing. A wine that seems to float over the tongue with coolness and finesse, leaving you wanting another with every glass. Its Burgundian and playful style is pleasantly provocative, and you are practically captivated by its finesse. However, you should summon the necessary patience to pay homage to this long-distance runner, which will mature into a masterpiece of finesse with further maturation. Those impatient enough to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
