Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Windsbuhl 2015 (bio)
Wine Info
The Clos Windsbuhl is located on an old sedimentary limestone from the Secondary Period, at a very high altitude and bordering the forest, yet with a late-ripening climate. In 2015, this vineyard was harvested four weeks after the official harvest date in Turckheim!
Vineyard Info
The soil composition influences the character of this wine in that the magnesium-rich soil lends a certain “grainy” element to the structure, as well as an acidic acidity that can occasionally lead to an early end to fermentation.
Colour
Dense, slightly muted golden yellow.
Nose
The nose of the Riesling Clos Windsbuhl demands the decanter, because only with the necessary contact with oxygen does this limestone monument begin to reveal itself. A little fruit, but initially notes of almonds, light nuts, wine yeast, delicate smoky hints, and light tobacco emerge from the glass. After opening for a longer time, pomelo, pink grapefruit, and small red apples emerge. Density, depth, and exuberant minerality are the attributes that characterize this spectacular wine, which already promises great things in its aroma.
Palate
Distinctive, very dry, and incredibly precise with challenging spice and crystalline saltiness, it hits the tongue and immediately gets the saliva flowing. Similar to the nose, it is characterized by nutty, spicy, and yeasty notes. The fruit, still discreet in the background, is reminiscent of citrus and apple peel. This almost Burgundian-like wine should be left in the cellar for a few years; it will thank us with a true explosion of complexity.

Intense yellow in color, the 2015 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is deep, clear, pure, ripe and rich on the nose, with smoky and toasty (speck) aromas and lovely fresh lemon flavors. Coming from pure, thinner limestone soils, this is a tension-filled, pure and salty, but also rich and lush Riesling with great tension. Still closed but highly elegant, full of finesse and tension, this Riesling is provided with great length and aging potential. The 2015 Windsbuhl is going to be bottled with 12.4 grams of residual sugar and 12.3% alcohol. Fine tannins and grip here. Gorgeous, but keep it for ten years or more. So pure, so salty, so fresh and finessed. Tasted from the cask (on the fine lees already) in February 2017. To be bottled some days later.

Bright straw-yellow. Penetrating aromas and flavors of minerals, lavender, lemon and vanilla bean are very long and clean and display laser-like precision. The enamel-shattering acidity (the pH of 2.9 is really quite low) is buffered by a very ripe mouthfeel and a little bit of residual sugar (roughly 11 g/L residual sugar, though because of all that acidity, the wine tastes classically dry). Amazing purity of fruit and a crystalline mouthfeel bode well for this wine’s future; at once very acidic but also very ripe, this is a really amazing effort from Humbrecht. Very well done.
