Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg, Vendanges Tardives 2002
Christina Hilker: The 2002 Pinot Gris Rotenberg surprises the nose with a freshness that one would not have initially expected given its advanced ripeness. It offers a stimulating aroma of citrus and elderflower, accompanied by distinct hints that evoke the chalky soil in which it was grown. In addition to its freshness, it beguiles the palate with sweet aromas reminiscent of candied orange zest, dried apricots, peach compote, honey, and beeswax. Fine notes of coriander, soy, cinnamon, and cedarwood harmoniously round out its complexity.
Colour
Intense amber with sparkling golden reflections.
Nose
The 2002 Pinot Gris Rotenberg surprises the nose with a freshness that one would not have initially expected given its advanced ripeness. It has a stimulating aroma of citrus and elderflower, accompanied by distinct hints of the chalky soil in which it was grown. In addition to its freshness, it captivates with sweet aromas reminiscent of candied orange zest, dried apricots, peach compote, honey, and beeswax. Fine notes of coriander, soy, cinnamon, and cedarwood harmoniously round out its complexity.
Palate
The 2002 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is also extremely refreshing and stimulating on the palate. Its stimulating acidity is accompanied by a distinct salty note and a fine, unobtrusive sweetness. A truly exciting wine, excellent for pairing with food and likely to pleasantly surprise some wine drinkers with its mature creations from Alsace. In 2002, a grape quality with SGN potential grew in Rotenberg, but due to the approaching rain, it was harvested shortly beforehand. The result is a high-quality Vendange Tardive that is very close to SGN. The nose reveals the influence of the calcareous soil and noble rot: powerful mineral and honey aromas; the palate is sweet and intense: peach and apricot; the finish is delicious.

The intense but radiant amber-colored 2002 Pinot Gris Rotenberg Vendange Tardive opens with an intense but pure and elegant nose with ripe stone fruit aromas intermingled with flinty and iron-scented terroir aromas. It’s very well defined on the nose and highly stimulating. On the palate, this is a rich and intense, savory and saline-finishing VT from the cooler Rotenberg, which is facing west-northwest and hosts the vines, which average 21 years in age, in red-colored limestone soils. This is very elegant and balanced Pinot with remarkable, almost Riesling-like acidity and finesse and a mineral backbone that uplifts the rich body and makes it taste much less sweet but rather fruity. It has notes of stewed apples and pears with caramel, like tarte Tatin. 14% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.
