Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg 2021 (bio)
(Olivier Humbrecht).
Wine Information
The single vineyard Rotenberg de Wintzenheim is located on the western slope of the GC Hengst. The marly, chalky, and sandy bedrock is identical, but the Rotenberg has much shallower soils and is rich in iron. The iron element gives the soil a deep red colour, hence the vineyard’s name. Due to its high altitude and exposure to the Vosges Mountains, it also benefits from a climate that allows for late ripening. Rotenberg is capable of producing great sweet wines, but also wonderful dry wines with strong acidity and, above all, an intense aromatic expression that is atypical for this normally neutral grape variety.
Vine Information
It is traditionally one of the estate’s most acidic Pinot Noirs and is therefore one of the slowest-fermenting. To ensure that fermentation results in a dry wine, we must implement strict ripeness controls at harvest time to harvest grapes with ideal alcohol potential, without compromising phenolic ripeness. Biodynamic farming allows for faster skin ripening, which is very helpful for this grape variety to avoid high alcohol levels. The 2021 vintage is a good example of this work!
Colour
Bright and intense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2021 Pinot Gris Rotenberg presents itself with extremely exciting aromas: citrus fruits, lemon balm, bergamot, and a variety of herbs blend into notes of juicy quince and apple, as well as hints of honey and vanilla foam. You’ll be immediately tempted to take the first sip.
Palate
This Pinot Gris is invigorating on the palate; in the 2021 vintage, it is animated by a freshness reminiscent of Riesling. An incredibly inspiring wine, characterized by a saline note and brilliant acidity, almost mouthwatering, with a fantastic aftertaste and excellent aging potential. Alsatian Pinot Gris at its best! Anyone who wants to enjoy it now should definitely decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to gain more expression.
