Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg 2020 (bio)
Olivier Humbrecht:
Wine Information
The single vineyard Rotenberg de Wintzenheim is located on the western slope of the GC Hengst. The marly, calcareous, and sandy bedrock is identical, but the Rotenberg has much shallower soils and is rich in iron. The iron element gives the soil a deep red colour, hence the vineyard’s name. Due to its high altitude and exposure to the Vosges Mountains, it also benefits from a climate that allows for late ripening. Rotenberg is capable of producing great sweet wines, but also wonderful dry wines with strong acidity and, above all, an intense aromatic expression, which is atypical for this normally neutral grape variety.
Vineyard Information
The yields are very low and among the lowest on the estate, which explains the strong sense of terroir in Rotenberg wines. The high acidity of this vintage is also the reason for very slow fermentation. In the past, Pinot Gris wines were often bottled earlier, but experience has shown us that such wines deserve longer aging on the lees, especially for wines as dry as the 2020.
Colour
Bright and intense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is razor-sharp, and combined with its fullness, it displays an invigorating freshness of bright fruits reminiscent of quince, pear, and citrus. Floral notes mingle with herbal fragrances. A truly invigorating opening that entices the taster to take the first sip.
Palate
On the tongue, this Pinot Gris enlivens with a freshness similar to Riesling. It floods the palate with finesse and expression, along with a fantastic juiciness that pairs perfectly with cuisine that showcases savoury aspects with intense spices. A true example of what Pinot Gris from Alsace should be! If you want to enjoy it now, be sure to decant it over several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. A few days of opening will allow it to gain more expression.
