Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2022 (bio)
Christina Hilker: Freshness is also the motto on the palate. Its acidity is invigorating and never overly satiating. The fruit is juicy and charming, the finish characterized by piquant spice – a wine that pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, preferably with nutty and spicy components. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses.
Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht: The Roche Calcaire 2022 comes entirely from the younger Pinot Gris vines planted at Clos Windsbuhl in 1992. As with many other Pinot Gris of the 2022 vintage, it was important to harvest them at a precise time to avoid overripeness. Pinot Gris is a fantastic grape variety, but like its brother, Pinot Noir, it requires a good terroir, reasonable yields, and a high-quality selection of clones or mass selection. This grape variety is grown on calcareous soils, giving it a firmer structure and stronger acidity. Despite the heat during the harvest, the 2022 vintage from Roche Calcaire retained good acidity and fermented bone-dry.
Colour
Brilliant golden yellow with delicate copper reflections.
Nose
The 2022 Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire displays immense freshness and delicately smoky notes, with quince, pear, citrus, and bright flowers such as acacia, elderflower, and a hint of fennel on the opening. A chalky, chalky finish rounds it off beautifully. A crisp, fresh aroma that invites you to savour it.
Palate
On the tongue, it reveals itself with gentle fruit, invigorating freshness, and a delicate piquancy that fades away with a highly stimulating finish. A fantastic accompaniment to dishes with bright fruity components and spicy notes. Its lively style invites you to have a glass or two more. Be sure to decant and enjoy it from a larger glass, not too cold.

Wine Advocate
Score: 92
From 32-year-old, 43 hectoliters per hectare-yielding vines on the Muschelkalk limestone soils of the cooler Clos Windsbuhl lieu-dit between Riquewihr and Hunawihr, the 2022 Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire is precise, coolish and fresh yet fully ripe and perfectly aromatic on the elegant and detailed nose. Elegant and fresh on the palate, with fine and stimulating acidity, this is a bone dry and slightly tannic but juicy Pinot Gris with a tight and almost a little astringent and bitter limestone finish. Keep the wine for another three years and you will enjoy its finesse and serious gastronomic character. It was bottled with a moderate 12.8% alcohol and less than one gram per liter of residual sugar. And yes, this 2022 is fully ripe and hasn’t been picked too early. Tasted in November 2024.
