Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018 (bio)
Wine Info
This wine is usually the second wine of the Pinot Gris from Clos Windsbuhl. Sometimes, small quantities from other single vineyards (Heimbourg and Clos Jebsal) may also be used, depending on the vineyard selection we make. The old Pinot Gris vines at Windsbuhl were planted in the 1960s or earlier. When we acquired the Clos in 1987, we had to partially replace some of the vines with Pinot Gris between 1988 and 1992. These “younger” vines are not used at Clos Windsbuhl and all go into this cuvée. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Vineyard Info
The style of the vineyard is very present: good acidity, an elegant, racy palate, but also a tendency toward residual sweetness when the ripeness is too advanced. It is therefore very important to harvest at the right time, and Pinot Gris can develop very quickly, which worked perfectly in 2018. We were able to dry-ferment the wine from very healthy grapes. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Color
Bright and dense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2018 Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire is compact with distinct spicy notes reminiscent of cinnamon, cardamom, and vanilla pod. With the necessary oxygen contact, aromas of orange, orange zest, baked apple, plums, and pickled grapes emerge. An extremely multifaceted aroma spectrum, rounded off by fine cedarwood and smoky notes and, at the same time, a fresh impression.
Palate
Freshness is also the credo on the palate. Its acidity is invigorating and never overly filling. The fruit is juicy and charming, the finish characterized by piquant spice—a wine that pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, especially with nutty and spicy components. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses.

Score: 92
The 2018 Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire is a beautiful wine. Apricot, chamomile, orange peel and wild flower all grace an airy, weightless Pinot Gris built on finesse and understatement. Light tropical accents add layers of nuance over time. The Roche Calcaire is mostly young vine fruit from Clos Windsbuhl. It has all of the flavor signatures of its sibling, but with less palate weight and overall depth.
