Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire 2018 (bio)
Christina Hilker: Freshness is also the motto on the palate. Its acidity makes it invigorating and never overly satiating. The fruit is juicy and charming, the finish characterized by piquant spice – a wine that pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, preferably with nutty and spicy components. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses.
Wine Information
This wine is usually the second wine of the Pinot Gris from Clos Windsbuhl. Sometimes, small quantities from other individual vineyards (Heimbourg and Clos Jebsal) may also be used, depending on our vineyard selection. The old Pinot Gris vines at Windsbuhl were planted in the 1960s or earlier. When we acquired the Clos in 1987, we had to partially replace some of the vines with Pinot Gris between 1988 and 1992. These “younger” vines are not used at Clos Windsbuhl and all go into this cuvée. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Information on the Vineyard
The style of the vineyard is very present: good acidity, an elegant, racy palate, but also a tendency towards residual sweetness when ripeness is too advanced. It is therefore very important to harvest at the right time, and the Pinot Gris can develop very quickly, which worked perfectly in 2018. We were able to dry-ferment the wine from very healthy grapes. (Olivier Humbrecht)
Colour
Bright and dense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2018 Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire is compact with clear spicy notes reminiscent of cinnamon, cardamom, and vanilla bean. With the necessary oxygen exposure, aromas of orange, orange zest, baked apple, plums, and pickled grapes emerge. A truly multifaceted aroma spectrum, rounded off by subtle cedarwood and smoky notes, yet with a fresh impression.
Palate
Freshness is also the credo on the palate. Its acidity is invigorating and never overly satiating. The fruit is juicy and charming, the finish characterized by piquant spice—a wine that pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, preferably with nutty and spicy components. If possible, decant and enjoy from large glasses.
